Prayer – Forgive Us Our Debts
JR HIGH – NOV 4
Matthew 6:12 (HCSB)
12 And forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors.
Matthew 6:14–15 (HCSB)
14 “For if you forgive people their wrongdoing, your heavenly Father will forgive you as well. 15 But if you don’t forgive people, your Father will not forgive your wrongdoing.
1 John 1:5–10 (HCSB)
5 Now this is the message we have heard from Him and declare to you: God is light, and there is absolutely no darkness in Him. 6 If we say, “We have fellowship with Him,” yet we walk in darkness, we are lying and are not practicing the truth. 7 But if we walk in the light as He Himself is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus His Son cleanses us from all sin. 8 If we say, “We have no sin,” we are deceiving ourselves, and the truth is not in us. 9 If we confess our sins, He is faithful and righteous to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. 10 If we say, “We don’t have any sin,” we make Him a liar, and His word is not in us.
God is light and there is no darkness in Him. He gives us the gift of living in light through forgiveness.
Jesus taught us to pray, “Forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors.”
Debts are what is owed to God because of sin, and we can’t afford the price of freedom.
Debts keep us in bondage, sin is slavery.
God forgives us in the same manner that we forgive others, (“as we also” vs12)
How do you know that you are forgiven? (Confession)
Confession is good for our group because it allows us to take off our self-righteous masks and be honest. No one is without sin.
Sin wants to isolate you, confession builds community
If we confess, He is faithful and righteous.
How to confess. (To a fellow Christian that you trust from your church.)
How to receive a confession and offer forgiveness in Jesus name.
What is a scene from a movie that has a confession in it?
What happened after that person confessed?
What do you think happens to your debt of sin when you confess it?
What might be some hard parts about confessing sin to other Christians
What should a Christian do when someone confesses sin to them?
Which is easier; Confessing specific sin or in sin general terms
Which is healthier of those two options? Make a list of the pros and cons
Simplify your words by only saying what is true and avoiding deception.
Our goal is to seek first God’s Kingdom and His righteousness. If we are doing that, then it will make sense that we say things that are right. In reverse, saying things that are true and right will help us to seek first God’s Kingdom and his righteousness.
